Will Polaris/Victory/Indian be the Biggest US Motorcycle Manufacturer in 2013?

Looks like they almost did it in 2012.

    According to this:

    http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix....742&highlight=

Polaris increased from 146,328 'On-Road Vehicles' (and my understanding is nearly all of their on-road vehicles are motorcycles) in 2011 to 240,172 in 2012.

    And according to this:

    http://investor.harley-davidson.com/...785&highlight=

Harley Davidson sold 233,117 motorcycles in 2011 and 247,625 in 2012.

So Polaris was within a little over 7000 bikes of topping Harley this year and based on the growth rates of both companies, it looks like Polaris is almost guaranteed to sell more than Harley in 2013.

    How about that?

*EDIT* - After Hellgate's post below, I went back and re-read the report and I think I may have had it completely wrong. I was looking at dollar sales figures as units and that means I was completely wrong in my interpretation. It looks Polaris' numbers are still very small compared to Harley.

If HD disappeared entirely little would be lost to motorcycles, IMHO.

    I'd agree.

It seems that whenever I talk to a Harley fan, their response to "Harley makes overweight, underpowered, uncomfortable bikes based on obsolete technology and they aren't good at doing anything other than posing" their response is typically - "Oh yeah? Just look at the sales."

It will be fun when they don't have that argument to stand on anymore.

What a stupid retort. Using that logic, a Chevrolet is a better car than a Ferrari.

    You can't fix stupid.

That's not unit sales, that's total dollars by type.

That said Polaris had $3.2B in total sales for '12, whereas HD had $5.58B in total sales for the same period. Regardless, Polaris looks to be on the right path.

Polaris only sold a little over 47,000 on road vehicle, Harley is in no threat from Victory or Indian, not by a long shot. The rest of Polaris sales come from snow mobiles and off road vehicles making up the majority of sales.

I just went back and checked and it looks like I might have completely mis-read that. Thanks.
