    Can't shift into third gear

Has anyone experienced this issue before:

When the engine is cold, the bike seems to like to drop into third gear, when shifting up from second, easily. However, once the bike is warmed up, I can only get into third around 5k rpm. Whether the bike is cold or hot, I have no problem getting to third gear from fourth gear at any rpm. This problem only seems to occur when warm and shifting from second to third. The bike is a 2014 with ~1100 miles on it. Any suggestions?

    Clutch ?
    What viscosity of oil ?

All stock, oil recently changed with the same AMSOL 20w-50. Going to check the levels when I get home to make sure that is not the issue.

You could have bent a shift fork or one is coming loose too.

What buell-fan said. Could also be a weak spring (that holds the shift fork against the detent (star).
It's got nothing to do with the engine oil or bleeding the clutch system.

Since my transmission knowledge is not where it should be, one of the above issues could potentially make it so that I can upshift into third at exactly 5k rpm (no lower and no higher), but be able to downshift into third at any rpm? Maybe a worn dog in that one direction?

The RPM that it works at depends more on throttle position and how much pressure you are putting on the trans.
the dogs are the part that holds the gears together to get whatever gear you want. Worn out dogs wont stop it from going into gear, they will pop out of gear under power.

The shift drum, that the shift forks ride on, to move the gears to where the dogs can engage, could have a worn 'divot' that's holding the shift fork from moving when it's under pressure. Super weird and rare, but I'm pretty sure you can pull it out with out total engine disassembly. Dunno, don't quote me on that. I'll have to read up on the 1190.

A weak detent ball against the star of that shift drum will also make it jump between gears and pop out of gear, but not stop it from engaging.

If the shift drum is sticking that could do it.

Bent shift forks from abuse can do all sorts of weird things. Worn out dogs can put pressure on the shift forks while under power and overheat them until they bend as well.

The shift shafts that the shift forks ride on could stop it from going into gear easily but also super rare to wear out.

The moral is, unless you can get the shift drum out, everything else means your taking the engine apart. With that super low mileage, I wouldn't think anythings worn out. I'd guess more like it got knocked over and bent the soft shaft that the gear shift lever attaches too.

    Sorry for the novel.

No, this was exactly what I was looking for, thank you!

Ok, I will take a look through the manuals for more on the assembly of the soft shaft and shift drum. See if there is anything else I can diagnose. Thank you again for the detailed descriptions.
