Literately...it's got somewhat, bad smelling "stuff" running out of it..!

Well, seems my bike killed my $190 battery on the way home from work today.
The engine sputtered to a stop, I was going fast (maybe 45mph) enough to cross the freeway (rush-hour traffic) to the shoulder.
Because I had no electrical power, I removed the seat to find a smelly, hot battery.

Finally made it home on the back of a wrecker. The battery showed 6.1 volts ! I had a spare (long story), plugged it in, cringed and hit the starter button, everything still works, seems...nuthin got burned. Checked the voltage at idle, 14.3. A little high, but usable. Rev'ed the engine to 3500rpm...16.7 volts..!
All I can say is, I guess it coulda been worse.

At just over 18,000 miles, I guess I need another expensive regulator..!
Hmm, 1. front disc needs replacing, 2. right side body cracked at upper body to frame mount, 3. regulator bad, 4. battery trash. Not a good average for only 18,000 miles.

Hint...watch your magneto (generator/alternator, whatever you want to call it) output..!

Wow...I forgot just how nice headlights CAN be.
Having to drive my little XB12, with HID lights, is "really" nice. Lights everything very nicely. No horse power, but it handles great..!

Can install on the bike standart battery, not Shorai or other LiFePO4?

Don't know if any lead-acid battery will fit the small space and have enough power.
I've thought about it but with the voltage as high as it probably was at a higher rpm, don't know if any battery would take the abuse for very long..!

I asked about it because I do not find analogues such batteries on Shorai catalog. This battery is only suitable in the EBR and is 1,5 times more expensive than similar LiFePO4 batteries. I do not want to think that because of its uniqueness...
Given the frequent problems (and still does not eliminate) with the Shorai batteries, I think about finding a replacement among ordinary gel batteries from other manufacturers (Yuasa, Varta etc.). In addition to the dimensions, I am concerned about the possibility of not to harm the on-board electronics EBR more powerful batteries (for example, 12Ah on Yuasa against 7Ah on Shorai from EBR).

I bought a smaller shorai- it is about 85% the volume the OEM on did

IIRC is was this one-
LFX18A1-BS12

I would suggest a look at Shorai's web site and do the measurement on the OEM vs this one.

Works like a champ!

$180 vs $305 for OEM

Slightly less CCA- but you would never know it by bike operation

Just added a couple pieces of the foam that comes with it, yeah?
I'm also curious to see how it would crank in colder months.

Where did you get your prices..?

The original cost is $209 and change.
It's currently on sale for $159. How do I know...I just bought one.

LFX21A7-BS12
Modification "A7" is put only on the EBR. I do not know, how it differents from "A6", for example...

http://www.shoraidirect.com/en/p102-lfx21-a-polarity-case-type-6

41% of the actual price.
"A7" is not even in Shorai catalog.

I found only this information about the A7:

"LFX21A7-BS12

MSRP: $159.95

SHORAI LFX Lithium-Ion Powersports battery, 7AH 12V, "A" polarity, Case Type 7 [92.4 WHr] Shorai Batteries require a charging system output of 13.1 Volts or higher at idle, and must not exceed 15.2 volts at maximum output.

Weight: 3.00 lbs (1.36 kg)
Cold Cranking Amps: 315
Polarity:[+ -]"

For comparison, about A6:

"LFX21 "A" polarity, case type 6

Price: US$135.95
41% Off MSRP Price

Weight (lbs): 2.95
Weight (kg): 1.34
Cold Cranking Amps: 315
Polarity: [+ -]"

New battery installed, new regulator installed. Charging seems to stay in the 14.2 to 14.6 range, up to about 3500 rpm.

The factory regulator installation was crap. There's supposed to be material that is between the regulator and the subframe plate to remove all air pockets. Well, by an obvious mark, only about 1/4 of the regulator was touching the mounting plate..! NOT good heat transfer.

So to make sure both the regulator and the mounting plate is flat, I ran a file over both parts, used some copper infused silicone and put the regulator in place. As far as the silicone...not a problem, we use it regularly when attaching black boxes to satellite framework where I work for the same heat soak situation.
I also bent the plastic wall right next to the regulator to let a little air in.

Then...THEN...the fans were not turning on. The fan fuse kept popping. Luckily I found the problem fairly quickly. The left side fan seized.
Jeeze, I just can't win.
NOT a cheap fix.

One more day on the XB. Gotta take the RX for a drive around town to make sure everything's really ok, before hitting the traffic on the freeway.

The voltage regulator should only have 5 wires coming out (3 yellow, a red and a black). I had an issue with mine on my 1125r and replaced it with a Shindengen SH775. It works great. It is not a shunt type regulator which grounds the windings to cut the flow of electrical current to the battery and allows heat to build up in the windings. This style disconnects the windings so it doesnt produce current when not needed. This also helps with parasitic HP drain due to the windings being charged when they dont need to be. Let me know if you need any further info.

Oops- sorry- just saw your question!

The $305 is what a dealer was going to charge me for it. At that point I was going to go back to Lead acid or ???, but not spend 3 bills on a battery....

I suggested the other one as a substitute - I could not find the OEM one on the interwebs, though apparently zviadi apparently did in post #10!

Is that the part you bought? Exact as OEM replacement?
